Office Essentials for Small Businesses

Setting up the space for your small business is just as important as establishing your name, mission statement, and all of those things that matter in the beginning. Even for the most budget-conscious small business owners, a well-supplied and well-tooled office is foundational to your success. Whether you’re just opening your small business or you’re a start-up veteran, your office is one space that shouldn’t be overlooked. Here are some office essentials for your new business.

Computer

No matter the industry you’re in, a computer will be one of the main tools you will use in day-to-day operations. From word processing to spreadsheets and emails to internet access, your computer will be your business’s best friend. Though it’s tempting to buy the latest model, it’s important to frame your purchase specifically around your business’s needs.

Stationery

While many companies are adopting a paperless system of operations, the reality is that not every office task or facet has a digital counterpart that you can install, nor is having a fully digital office the most budget-friendly option. As a result, it’s important to be well-stocked in writing tools, paper goods, and miscellaneous items like staplers and paper clips.

Printer

A good printer is essential to sharing information, especially in offices that don’t have the luxury of individual computers or tablets. From budget reports and employee contracts to daily notices and notes, printers are one of the most-used tools in any office. The added bonus, now, is the multi-functionality (scanning, photocopying, collating, etc.) of many printers available in the market.

Storage

Cabinets, shelves, and other organizational units are key to maintaining a clean and low-stress environment. Files and folders are important too: it’s not enough to just shove documents into drawers with free space. Using your cabinets and folders, create a system of organization that will help you stay on top of your day-to-day tasks.

White Board

Every conference room—or whichever room you conduct meetings in—needs a white board. It’s the perfect ready-when-you-need-it tool when you’re brainstorming ideas, presenting information, or taking visual notes. While many offices opt for using projectors, there’s nothing like the freedom of taking a marker and the flexibility of scribbling your way towards a genius idea.

Planner

Specifically, one that you can take with you wherever you go. If you can, find a planner with note-taking spaces adjacent to each day of the year. That way, you can stay on top of your appointments and scribble in daily, weekly, and monthly to-do lists.

Cleaning Supplies

An often-overlooked aspect of the office space, cleaning supplies will always be handy. Whether they’re minor coffee spills, dirt being brought in by people’s shoes, or dust that will inevitably collect on your shelves, having a set of cleaning supplies will help you maintain your office space. After all, a clean office space will make you feel good about yourself and your business.

Wi-fi

It almost goes without saying that wi-fi has become a necessity in both our professional and personal lives. As a result, a strong wi-fi connection is key to performing many daily tasks, so consult your provider and make sure what you purchase fits the needs of your office. Nobody likes a bad wi-fi connection, and your business certainly doesn’t need it.
